Professor Haoyu CHEN 陈浩宇
Professor Haoyu Chen received MD from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, China. He undertook post-doctoral research at John A. Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, USA. In 2008, he joined Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC), Shantou University & the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an associate professor and was promoted to professor of ophthalmology in 2015. He has served as the Associate Director (Research and Education) of JSIEC since 2016.
Prof. Chen is an eminent physician-scientist in Asia with high international acclaim. Annually, he attends >5000 outpatient consultations, performs >800 vitrectomy and >500 cataract operations. Prof. Chen’s research interests include 1) ocular imaging and artificial intelligence; 2) genetic and molecular mechanisms of retinal diseases; 3) surgical management of ocular trauma and vitreoretinal diseases; 4) medical education. His research has been supported by regional and national research grants, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has published 210 original articles, 9 reviews, and 16 book chapters. His H-index is 42 (Google Scholar). A keen teacher, Prof Chen supervises undergraduate teaching, postgraduate programs and resident training. He has supervised >45 postgraduate students in ophthalmology. He also developed the first Ophthalmology MOOC.
Prof. Chen serves as an academic assessor, reviewer or external examiner for international research grants, PhD viva examinations and faculty promotions. He is an editorial board member of APJO, International Ophthalmology, BMC Ophthalmology and Clinical Ophthalmology, and a reviewer for 70 journals, including Ophthalmology and IOVS.
Prof. Chen received APAO Achievement Award, Outstanding Ophthalmologist Award from the Chinese Ophthalmologist Association, Publons Peer Review Awards (the top 1% of reviewers worldwide) for 4 years, and the First Prize of the 10th Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Innovation Award.
